Buddha entwined in tree roots.

Buddha entwined in tree roots.

2.07

I had seen this image on photos and cheap cards many times before I got to visit the site in person.

You can find this well know Buddha in Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya, Thailand.

There are a few theories about how head of this image of Buddha got entwined in the roots of the tree, but there is no official story.

Most likely the head was simply overgrown in the period after the Birmese army destroyed the temple 14th century complex in 1767 and with it the images of the Buddha by severing the heads.

Only in the 1950s did restoration of the site begin. So the tree had had enough time to grow around the head of the Buddha, perhaps to protect it?
