Street restaurant in Bangkok

2.07

Like the sun is at the center of our solar system, so is food at the center of Thai culture.

The joke goes that during breakfast, the conversation topic is what’s for lunch and likewise, during lunch dinner plans are being made.

It should come as no surprise then that you will find eateries on the corner of each and every street. These eateries often consist of nothing more than a plastic foldable table on top of which you will find and assortment of condiments, usually to spice things up (even more), some sugar, ground peanuts and various soy and fish sauces. And dried chillies, of course.

Street eateries are often a small constellation of different stalls each specializing in one or two dishes only. Should you want something else, the stall owner simply gets it from his or her neighbour.

Visiting Thailand and not eating on the streets, is not having visited Thailand at all.
